Serena Williams: The determination of uphill and downhill
Serena Jameka Williams born September 26, 1981 in Saginaw (Michigan), United States. Venus’s younger sister, joined the professional tennis circuit in 1997, giving way to climbing the world rankings in just a short time. After beating Mary Pierce and Monica Seles, the days in the top ten of the WTA rankings, tournament in Chicago, Serena begins to be appreciated more and more, in the United States and around the world.
After earning the top 30, won the first Grand Slam title in 1999, winning the U.S. Open final against SwissMartina Hingis , the number one world ranking. Serena, then, becomes, after Althe Gibson in 1958, the second African-American tennis player to win the U.S. Open. The encore in a Grand Slam tournament came shortly after, but in doubles, when together with her sister Venus Williams wins the French Open. The following seasons confirm the triumphs in doubles, with wins at Wimbledon and the 2000 Olympics in Sydney and in 2001 the Australian Open.
The number one position in the WTA ranking came in 2002, according to the successes in the individual at Roland Garros, Wimbledon and U.S. Open: In all three cases, obtained the victory in the final against her sister Venus. Even in later years the girl from Saginaw remains at high levels, even winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon. The primacy in the world rankings, however, is removed, after almost sixty weeks of uninterrupted rule, the Belgian Kim Clijsters, also because of some injuries that take away from the playing fields for the latter part of 2003. Injuries that affect the performance of the following: no wins in major tournaments, and only two trophies of lesser importance, in China and Miami.
The best result, then, is realized in the Wimbledon final loss to Maria Sharapova , a rising star of Russian tennis. As the sporting successes recede, however, Serena Williams earns respect and reputation in other fields, often parading as a model (and posing for a special edition of the magazine “Sports Illustrated”) but also creating a line of sportswear staff.Dresses that, moreover, the girl would wear in the field, but often the referees are not the same opinion. Also in 2004, not missing a raid on the small screen: states, in fact, in the Damon Wayans sitcom “All in the family. ”
The return to win on the field of play is staged in early 2005 in Melbourne, with victory in the final in the Australian Open in the derby with her compatriot Lindsay Davenport. The expectations of the fans, however, should be immediately disappointed, because that remains the only victory of the year: hence, Serena out of the top ten world ranking. A negative trend continues, with disastrous results in 2006: Williams, plagued by injuries, falls in the standings remain excluded even from the first hundred. The resurrection, however, not long in coming: In 2007, Serena won the Australian once again Open, defeating Maria Sharapova in the final, and rises progressively ranking. The 2008 is the year’s final in Wimbledon played and lost against her sister Venus, but also won Olympic gold in doubles in Beijing, of course, always with Venus.
Five years after the last time, then, the African-American tennis player back in first place in the world rankings in September, thanks to winning the U.S. Open came after the success in the final against Serbian Jelena Jankovic. From there begins a series of ups and downs between the first and second place, alternating with Russia’s Dinara Safina. We arrive, so in 2009, with the third Wimbledon title, won again against Venus in the individual, and doubles against the Australian Stosur and Stubbs. The success of the double repeat in the U.S. Open, ten years after the first time, against Huber and Black. now the career of Serena and Venus goes hand in hand is no accident that the first 12 October 2009 back to the top of WTA rankings defeating the second at the Masters in Doha.
The beginning of the 2010 reveals very positive, with the final victory in Sydney and Melbourne: the twelfth Slam comes thanks to the success in the final against Belgian Justine Henin. Conflicting results on clay: after the deletions in single in Rome – in the semifinals – and Paris – to the quarter-finals – two wins in Madrid and Roland Garros. No problem, however, the grass, with yet another success at Wimbledon. For achievements in the field, however, followed by health problems severe enough, first a foot injury, and then a worrying pulmonary embolism, threatening the career Serena Williams. The African-American athlete jumps throughout the first half of the season, and back on the field until June at Eastbourne, where, however, eliminates the Zvonareva in the second round.Even the grass of Wimbledon girlfriend Serena Williams has a hard, eliminated in the second round by France’s Marion Bartoli.
Dropped in rank to the position 169esima, back to win a tournament in July at Stanford, where he showcases grit and tenacity. applause, then, is welcome at the U.S. Open in 2011, where only an extraordinary Samantha Stosur in prevents the final to win yet another Grand Slam. The great and decisive return, however, was staged in 2012: course at Wimbledon. In the land of the cup whipped cream and strawberries, Serena won the tournament with class and elegance, permanently banishing the ghosts (health problems and embolism) with just over a year before they had feared for his life.
